Flooring underlayment is crucial for a sound installation of a hardwood or LVT floor. Floor underlay is helps to ensure stability, insulation, sound reduction and protection from moisture vapour as well as helping to keep a room at a reasonable temperature. Floor underlayment forms a barrier between the subfloor and floor covering, helping to ensure a sturdy footing.
Choosing the best flooring underlay for concrete subfloors
Preventing moisture is a key consideration when laying hardwood, engineered wood or LVT flooring to a concrete subfloor. That’s because concrete’s porous nature can result in a level of moisture retention, which could damage or even warp wooden flooring over time. To prevent moisture build up, we suggest an underlay with a built-in vapour barrier that shields your wood flooring from moisture such as Provent, Marldon M-527 Gold or Marldon M-321 Silver underlay. Where a full moisture barrier is needed, we would recommend the Marldon Damp Proof Membrane or Junckers Sylvathene underlay.
Choosing the best flooring underlay for wooden subfloors
Unlike with a concrete subfloor, if you are installing a wooden floor onto a wooden subfloor a built-in moisture barrier is less important as it’s less likely that moisture will be present. Deciding which underlay to choose for a wooden subfloor will be determined by the requirements of each individual installation; whether it be sound reduction, the need for a fully bonded floor covering or just simply a sound base for the floor to be installed on top of, we’ve got the product for you.
