A big cha-cha-change for Blackpool Tower Ballroom

Blackpool Tower Ballroom is one of the most prestigious venues in the whole of the UK, and certainly the most iconic ballroom – famous worldwide amongst ballroom dancing enthusiasts. Opened in 1894, the Blackpool Tower Ballroom has seen many a tango, foxtrot and waltz and has also been home to a special week of Strictly Come Dancing almost every year since 2004.


We were delighted to find out that Nu-Life had been chosen to give the whole ballroom floor a well-deserved revamp, with the incredible task of restoring it to its former glory.


Nu-life is one of Manchester’s top floor cleaning, polishing and restoration experts, with over 40 years in the business, so they were the obvious choice to be trusted with this magnificent piece of history.


Of course, it was our pleasure to support them with the materials they needed to get the job done, from sanding belts and discs to primers and lacquers, it was our job to make sure the materials were there when they needed them.


The first job back in January 2022, Nu-life got straight to work - sanding back over 100 layers of lacquer that had been applied over the years. With over 3 decades since its last big restoration, they certainly had their work cut out.


Providing next day delivery and ensuring products were ready for collection when needed, we made sure that Nu-Life could get on with the job at hand without having to worry about running short on materials. We even hand delivered some primer on one of the final days of the project and got to see the amazing job firsthand.


After 3 weeks of hard work from the team at Nu-Life, 30,602 blocks of oak, mahogany and walnut that make up the 120 x 102ft ballroom floor were sanded, primed and lacquered, giving them a new lease of life. Some may even say the floor is looking more magnificent than ever before.


Mike Philbin, CEO of NuLife, which led the works, said: “The Blackpool Tower Ballroom is home to one of the most famous dancefloors in the world so it was a real honour to be brought onto the project.


“This was a particularly challenging refurb for us due to the number of layers of lacquer painted on over the years, which needed to be broken down before we could restore the original floor.


“The end result is phenomenal though and regular ballroom dancers will really notice the difference once they get out there. Plus visually, it looks incredible and only adds to the ballroom’s ‘wow’ factor.” 


Part of a huge £1.1million restoration project at the 125-year-old, grade 1 listed Blackpool Tower Ballroom, the floor restoration has certainly brought back the wow factor!
